As the first wetland to be declared a Ramsar site, Bundala is the best place to observe endemic and migrant birds in Sri Lanka. Located along the southern coastline it consists of lagoons, marshes and sandy dunes. Bundala attracts 197 species of birds, the major one being the greater flamingo. It sees an abundance of other migratory birds who want to escape the harsh winters of the North. Bundala also won the title “UNESCO biosphere reserve” in the year 2005. It is also home to 32 species of mammals including elephants, deer and fishing cats, as well as the endangered Star Tortoise. Its coastline acts as a breeding ground for the precious sea turtles, all five species of them can be seen laying eggs here.
