Colombo is a vibrant capital city standing on the footprints made by foreign powers of the bygone era such as the Dutch and British. The past seamlessly mixes with the present in the guise of road and area names, monuments and religious sites, food, outfits and more. Attractions include the old parliament building, Galle Face Green, Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Independence square, Gangarama Temple and Beira Lake, and the Cenotaph War Memorial for the loved ones lost in the two World Wars, as well as many Hindu temples, bazaars and markets. Each has its own backstory weaving into the historical milieu of the city, which today is a metropolis with its many high risers and skyscrapers.
