Hakgala Gardens were founded in 1860 and is the second largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. At 28 hectares, it lies at an elevation of 1745 meters above sea level in several terraces. Due to the low temperatures experienced in this area, as low as 16 degrees centigrade at a time, Hakgala is the proud owner of colourful flower gardens including the enchanting roses and iridescent orchids. A highland bird species, the Dull Blue Flycatcher who is also endemic to Sri Lanka is probably the star of Hakgala. Despite the sheer number of visitors to the garden, this rather big, sparrow-sized flycatcher can be seen flying free in the park.
