Designated a national park in 1988 due to its flora – montane grassland and cloud forest with endemic woody plants – and fauna – many endemic species of animals, out of which some are restricted to this area – the Horton plains is perhaps the most awesome and forbidding region in Sri Lanka. Located on a high windswept plateau at an elevation of about 7000 feet, this area is known for its vegetation and animals, as well as the tourist attractions such as “the world’s end” with its unparalleled view of the valley beyond with a sheer drop of more than 1000 feet, and the beautiful curtain of white waters, the Bakers falls. This awe-inspiring site is home to many mammals like the leopard and sambar, in addition to 21 bird species who are endemic to Sri Lanka. A walk is a must in this misty wonderland.
