Located in the north-most area of the tiny island Sri Lanka, Jaffna is a city with ancient roots. It has been a politically important stronghold from the time of the kings. People from Malabar, India sought residence here, and now make the most of its population. From the fair skin and Tamil language spoken with a special lilt, they can be recognized anywhere in Sri Lanka. Jaffna is well known for the Jaffna Fort, ancient kings’ palaces and gardens, Pedro Point – the tip of Sri Lanka -, Buddhist temples such as the one erected at the port believed to be where the Buddhist nun, Sanghamitta embarked carrying the sacred Fig tree, and Hindu temples such as the most revered Nallur kovil. More recent attractions to visit are from the thirty year war remnants.
