Kalpitiya is a less-travelled beach destination in the Puttalam district towards the west of Sri Lanka. Its beach season is ideally December to April, as the Indian Ocean then is calmer and waves are smaller. This time is generally considered the best for snorkeling, scuba diving as well as dolphin and whale watching. Even though the sea can get a bit rough due to the strong winds, from May to September the area again gets crowded with kitesurfers. Kalpitiya doesn’t get much rain and is in the dry zone of the country with thorny bushes and scarce wildlife. Nevertheless it attracts tourists with the marine sanctuary along with “Alankuda” beach which is home to “megapods” (groups of more than a thousand at a time) of dolphins.
