The central capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy was the final kingdom ruled over by the Kings hailing originally from India, known as the “Waduga” kings. The focal point of visit is the historical Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, where the tooth relic of Lord Buddha is believed to be housed. Known in Sinhala as “Sri Dalanda Maligawa”, it is the former royal palace (“maligawa”) complex. The Kandy “Esala” procession which generally takes place in August, is known world over for its vibrant and colourful exhibition of the cultural legacy of Sri Lanka. There are many other places to visit such as the Kandy Lake, “Bahiwara kanda” mountain temple, Hindu temples, bazaars and markets, and the modern mall Kandy City Centre or “KCC”.
