Connecting the sabragamuwa and central provinces, Kitulgala is situated almost in the border of Kegalle and Nuwara Eliya districts. Not a big metropolis, it is known for “Makandewa” – an unspoiled rainforest of more than 1155 hectares – which is the destination for bird watching, trekking, hiking and waterfall abseiling. The rainforest is rich in a diverse collection of flora and fauna, and hosts around 54 species of birds. The Kelani River, one of the four main rivers in Sri Lanka, flows through the small town. Whitewater rafting has thus become a popular adventure sport as the river is just the right amount of shallow in this area. Kitulgala is also known for the “bridge scene” of the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai”. According to the movie the bridge was blown off therefore today only the concrete posts used to build the bridge are visible.
