Covering an area of around 8,900 hectares Minneriya National Park is situated close-by to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and commonly-visited Habarana and Sigiriya. It is home to some of the island favourite fauna such as the sambar deer, spotted deer, wild buffalos, wild boars, porcupines, and leopards. This park hosts the largest elephant gathering in the world; it is thus the ideal place to watch and capture them quenching their thirst in the water tank, hanging around and engaging in aqua sports. It is a sight to behold and a wildlife photographer’s dream come true. The avian life is also second to none, with more than 160 species of birds in the area. You may witness colourful jungle fowls, rare hornbills, and the deep blue of the kingfishers aiming for the fish in the water tank.
