Origins of Peradeniya botanical garden dates back to the time of King Wickramabahu’s reign circa 1371. He and several other kings after him used it to keep court; after the British captured Kandy, they planted cinnamon and coffee in the garden, and the first tea bush was planted here in 1824. In 1843 it was formally established as a botanical garden. It thrived under the many curators appointed during the British era. Spanning over 140 acres, the garden is home to more than 4000 species of plant life, including the famous orchids and other flowers, spices, palm trees, medicinal plants and more.
