A comparatively untouched soft white-sand beach and water that is of the bluest hue signifies the remote Trincomalee city as a popular tourist destination. Located in the northeastern flank of Sri Lanka, “Trinco” is an important port city hailing from the days of the Kings. Under the colonial rule, the Portuguese built “Fort of Triquillimale” which the Dutch rebuilt and renamed “Fort Frederick”. It stands strong till today surrounding the “Swami Rock”, inside which is the ancient Koneswaram temple (Temple of a Thousand Pillars). The famous temple is devoted to the God Shiva and believed to be built originally by King Ravana himself. Other attractions include the Nilaveli beach which is ideal for surfing and named after its well-loved powder blue (“nil”) sea.
