Initially created as a sanctuary for animals displaced by the newly constructed Udawalawa Reservoir on the Walawe River during 1972, the Udawalawa National Park covers an area of 30,821 hectares. It is a major habitat for Sri Lankan elephants and water birds. Udawalawa National Park lies within two provinces, sabaragamuwa and uva and is largely inhabited by mammals such as elephants, spotted deer, sambar, water buffaloes, toque monkeys, grey langur, leopards, mongoose, foxes, and more. Other animal families such as water monitor lizards, crocodiles, and various snakes are present here along with a number of birds. Udawalawa is famous for its Jeep safaris.
