Unawatuna is such a blissfully beautiful coastline, it is believed what Valmiki refers to as a “beach paradise” in the epic “Ramayana” is Unawatuna. It is a major tourist attraction for the corals, surfing and nightlife, in addition to the expansive beach where you can lay forever watching the sun going down. The sea is calm and separated by several coves and bays, and is perfect for swimming. Not only that, Unawatuna is historically important as “Roomassala” – which is believed to be a part of an herb mountain Hanuman brought to Sri Lanka to heal Rama’s forces – is stationed there. The area is rich in biodiversity including the endemic monkey, purple-faced langur, coral reefs, and many fish and turtle species.
