Sri Lanka is synonymous with heritage and culture. A rich written history of more than 2500 years exists in the island. Moreover recent excavations have unearthed proof of a developed lifestyle even earlier than that. Sri Lankan heritage tells the story of a highly developed agricultural society with a sovereign-led rule. Among others, the irrigation techniques are astonishingly advanced that it is difficult to fathom what they would have been capable of. If one studies just the religious building structures throughout the time he can get an idea about the beginning and expansion of Sri Lankan architecture; it is evident in the mix and match of – first the indigenous, then Indian, Roman-Dutch and English influence. Not surprisingly the culture also follows a similar pattern. Today it is a combination of original and colonial roots, which is evident in food, events, clothing, lifestyle and more.
